The word Mezcal comes from the Nahuatl word MEXCAMETL that means Agave.

It is unclear whether distilled drinks were produced in Mexico before the Spanish Conquest. The Spaniards were introduced to native fermented drinks such as pulque, also made from the agave plant. Soon the conquistadors began experimenting with the agave plant to find a way to make a distillable fermented mash. The result was Mezcal.

The origin of this drink has a myth. It is said that a lightning bolt struck an agave plant, cooking and opening it, releasing its juice. For this reason, the liquid is called the “elixir of the gods” or the “drink from heaven”, and its drinking ritual is still used among current consumers.

In Oaxaca, among other regions in Mexico, Mezcal is sprayed over the tombs and sepulchres in each Nov 2nd, so this way the souls of the dead can find the way to eternal life.

Mezcal is a must gift for any engagement party, it is also used to bless work places and homes and one of the most popular uses is to perform white magic.

The drinking ritual is to proffer it to the 4 cardinal points and then spilling a small portion onto the ground as an offering to the Mayahuel, the goddess of maguey and the fertility of the earth.

History tells that MEZCAL is a product resulted out of the Aztecs and Spanish mix. Actually the Spaniards were the ones that introduced the distilling process in to the MEZCAL.

Mission Cielo pays a tribute to those who centuries ago created and perfected this magical spirit, we have developed a unique liquid evolving the category into a new age of flavor and aroma.

Santiago Matatlan, Oaxaca is the Mezcal’s World Capital.
